In fact, most people who make Black Forest Cakes or cupcakes in the United States aren’t actually making an authentic BFC. There is a mandate in Germany that states that if Kirschwasser is not used in this cake, it can not be called a Black Forest Cake. Cherries! The Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte or Black Forest Cake is made with layers of chocolate cake filled with cherries soaked in a cherry brandy (Kirschwasser) and fresh whipped cream topped with cherries and chocolate shavings. We originally opened in June 2009 in Capitola (1420 41st Ave., Suite B), Starz Cupcakes has been a successful venture for Lisa Brighton and her business partner, daughter Connie Brighton-Wooten. During this time, he married Elizabeth Wilkeson, who was sent from Rhode Island by her brother (her brother was close friends with Benjamin Arthur), to be the cook and baker for the hands on the ranch. He stayed there until 1847, then headed north to mine on the Feather River, settling in Covelo, Mendocino County, where the Indian reservation now stands. One sidenote at this point, when reading my grandfather's journals, there was an interesting statement written prior to him leaving Los Angeles which was "I'm not sure, I could miss my guess, but I do believe this place they call Los Angeles might amount to something someday". At that time there were several adobe houses and one mission. He headed for California when he was 11 years old on the Chilies-Walker Wagon-train in 1843, stopping in Salt Lake City and then continuing onto where Los Angeles now stands. This journey began with Benjamin Arthur, who was born in Ohio in 1831. This is how our family came to California and how we happen to have such an amazing history of bakers in our family. Many of these recipes have been taught and handed down for generations within our family. We will take you back to a time when baking was a "true" art.
